Corrugated boxes are considered as the best versatile packaging option for use in logistic, warehouse, shipping and distribution markets. The superior strength to weight ratio makes it the best choice for these packaging solutions.

The boxes are usually measured from the inside, referring to the opening of a packed box. There are many methods to measure a box, such as inner dimension, outer dimension and order of dimension.

Outer dimension or inner dimension

There are many ways to measure the box; these tips are to help you to understand the requirements for deciding the right dimensions. The dimensions are measured in terms of length (L), width (W), and height or depth (H). The length is referred for longer side, while the width for the shorter of the two sides. The depth (or height) is the distance between the opposite and the opening panel.

Outside the box

The outer dimensions are used for transport considerations like pallet patterns and case forming. When determining the ideal good to mount, tape, form your box, outer dimensions are used.

Inside the box

The inner measurements are measured for a correct fit of your goods. As the thickness varies from one box to another, inner dimensions are considered.

How to measure a box?

The standard box comes in the size of 15 in x 10 in x 9 in (L x W x H), while the tall box measures 3 in x 4 in x 13 in (L x W x H), and the long box is estimated to be of 15 in x 3 in x 4 in (L x W x H).

The most common flute profiles are as below:

  • A flute: Approximately 33 flutes/foot
  • B flute: Nearly 47 flutes/foot and 1/8 inch thickness, mainly used for canned products
  • C flute: Approximately 39 flutes/foot and 5/32 inch thickness, served as shipping cartons
  • E flute: Measures nearly 90 flutes/foot and 1/16 inch thick
  • F flute: Approximately 125 flutes/foot and 1/32 inch thick, used as small retail packaging

These flute profiles can also be combined, allowing you to modify the cushioning and compression strength and thickness of the board.
