It is an unusual time when almost all of us are used to spending more than half of our day outside. COVID 19’s has forced the residents of bustling cities to stay at home, which is not the best thing for a human being since we are organisms that depend on our communities. The current isolation that most human beings across the globe have come to harm the mental health of most people. It has also come to affect the self-perception of almost all of us.

Not all is bleak; however, as many people are working to rekindle the feeling of togetherness, we, the pandemic, and lockdown have brought upon us. Joey Horn, a passionate philanthropist, has been involved in many social causes. The managing director of Oak Management AS discusses some of the ways organizations are still making a difference in the world. She also discusses how they managed to creatively bring their volunteers together in this pandemic and foster a sense of community.

Music a medium to share passions

Restore the Music UK has made it its mission to ensure that foster the love for music. The organization donates money to schools that are struggling financially. Joey Horn has been working side by side with this organization and explained that in addition to donations, Restore the Music UK equips schools with quality instruments to upkeep a rigorous music program.

They have been actively working with the young generation to instill a love for music. In light of the pandemic, Restore the Music UK has been showcasing student success films in light of the cancellation of their yearly fundraiser gala. Through the films, they have helped the supporters of the cause engaged and make them feel like a part of the purpose of the organization

Making volunteering feasible in the pandemic

Most opportunities to interact with others during the social events created by these charities have been canceled. The pandemic has taken away the opportunities to build a sense of community that has been taken away to prevent the increase of COVID 19. Despite these difficult circumstances, online volunteering has emerged as a way to still engage with our community.

Joey Horn points to Cancer Research UK that has begun two interesting incentives: the Big Qui for Cancer Research UK and the e-campaigner option. The former involves the use of video calls to increase awareness and is fun at the same time. The latter hosts a myriad of options such as electronic letter-writing campaigns and awareness building and much more.

The rise of virtual personalized fundraising

Mothers2mothers is an organization that works with mothers with HIV/AIDS in Africa. They give support to needy women and children by educating and training them. They also provide jobs to mothers with HIV in the healthcare sector to mentor, educate, and provide support to their communities.

Joey Horn explained that Mothers2Mothers relied on social events such as group runs to obtain funding. In the pandemic, they have made fair use of their most innovative features: allowing volunteers to create their own even which they can use to raise awareness. Since the pandemic, many volunteers have come up with fun and innovative ideas for events like virtual charity bingo tournaments, weddings, and baby showers.
